The Samelin 598 are NATO-origin desert boots built for exactly the conditions the name implies: hot, dry, dusty environments where a heavy full-leather upper becomes a liability and breathability matters as much as durability. The solution Samelin arrived at — a water-repellent leather and textile hybrid upper over a direct-injected Vibram® sole — is the same engineering logic that has made the 598 a practical choice well beyond the military units it was originally designed for.

Handmade in Estonia. Certified to NATO AQAP 2110 and ISO 9001 standards. €139.99 — the most accessible entry point in the Samelin range.

The Hybrid Upper — Why Leather and Textile Together

Every other Samelin boot reviewed on this site uses a pure leather upper. The 598 is different: the upper combines water-repellent leather with water-repellent textile panels, with a breathable textile lining under the vamp. This is not a cost-reduction decision — it is a performance decision for warm-weather and desert conditions.

Full leather uppers insulate, which is exactly what you want in Norwegian winters and exactly what you don't want in high-heat environments. The textile panels in the 598's upper allow airflow through the boot, regulating foot temperature during extended wear in warm conditions. The leather panels provide structural integrity, abrasion resistance, and weather protection where they're needed most.

The result is a boot that is noticeably lighter and more breathable than the M77 or 2077, while retaining the Vibram® outsole and NATO-certified construction of the heavier Samelin models.

Vibram® Outsole — The Same Standard as the 5531

Like the Samelin 5531 Hiking Boots, the 598 is equipped with a direct-injected Vibram® outsole — bonded under pressure to the upper for permanent adhesion rather than the delamination risk of glued construction. Vibram® soles are the outsole standard for the majority of the world's premium outdoor and tactical footwear brands; the 598 carries the same sole technology at €139.99.

Direct injection means the sole is molded directly onto the boot's last and upper. The result is a sole-to-upper bond that won't separate after a wet season or heavy use — a common failure point in boots where the sole is applied with adhesive.

NATO AQAP 2110 & ISO 9001 Certified

The 598 is manufactured to NATO AQAP 2110 and ISO 9001 quality standards at Samelin's Estonian factory — the same facility that produces the M77 Norwegian Combat Boots for active NATO forces across Northern Europe. AQAP 2110 is an independently audited procurement standard governing materials, production processes, stitching strength, and sole bonding. It is not self-applied.

This certification applies to a €139.99 boot in the same way it applies to Samelin's military-contract footwear. The factory doesn't lower its standards for the retail product.

From Desert Operations to Everyday Use

The 598 was originally designed for NATO desert operations — sand, dust, heat, mixed terrain — and those design requirements translate well to a range of non-military contexts:

Urban daily wear: The clean silhouette and lower ankle profile make the 598 the most versatile-looking boot in the Samelin range. Lighter than the M77 or 2077, easier to wear with a wider range of clothing.

Travel: At approximately 1.3 kg per pair (size 41), light enough to pack or wear on long travel days. The breathable upper makes them practical for warm-destination trips where a full leather boot would be uncomfortable.

Light hiking and outdoor use: The Vibram® sole performs well on varied terrain. These are not a substitute for the 5531's waterproof nubuck construction in genuinely wet conditions, but on dry or mixed ground the 598 handles trail and outdoor use competently.

Warm-weather and summer use: The textile panels and breathable lining make the 598 the only Samelin boot designed for warm conditions. For buyers who want Samelin construction and certification in a warm-weather-capable boot, this is the only option in the range.

598 or 5531 — Which Vibram® Samelin Boot?

Both boots carry a Vibram® outsole and NATO certification from the same Estonian factory. The choice depends on conditions:

  • Choose the 598 if you need a lighter, more breathable boot for warm weather, dry terrain, urban use, or travel. Leather-textile hybrid upper, no waterproof membrane, lower ankle profile, €139.99.
  • Choose the 5531 if you need full waterproofing, a higher ankle for rugged terrain, and a thicker nubuck upper for cold or wet conditions. Waterproof nubuck, 4-layer membrane, €179.99.

Sizing — Order One Size Down

The 598 runs large. Order one EU size smaller than your usual size. If you normally wear EU 42, order EU 41. This is the most important note on this page — Samelin's desert boot sizing runs consistently large and returns are the most common outcome when buyers order their standard size.

Refer to our Size Guide for foot length measurements and US/UK conversions.
